Part of a big, happy family

Fučkar Željka from Croatia is 42 years old, a wife and proud mother of two sons. She has been working as a nurse for 24 years and last 10 years at NephroCare.

What do you do when you don’t work? Do you have special hobbies?
I do housework, I like to cook, I like to watch a good movie.
I love traveling and riding my motorcycle thrills me. I try to spend my free time in nature as much as I can.
Sometimes I make different decorations for  the house, depending on how inspired I am.

When did you know that you wanted to become a nurse?
When I was a child, I knew I was going to do something that involved taking care of other people. Being a nurse meant I could give a lot to people who needed help.

What was your motivation/ the most convincing aspect for you to become a renal nurse?
I encountered dialysis during my internship. Dialysis seemed very interesting and different from everything I had done before, I was attracted to it as we are caring for the patient. Getting acquainted with dialysis machines, something completely new and different. I knew that this was what I wanted to do. And I don't regret it!

What is the most important value/ quality a renal nurse should have?
Expertise, empathy, accessibility, open communication, trust-instilling security. All of it!

How would you describe your relationship to your patients?
I try to be open in communication with patients. Our patients spend a large part of their lives with us on dialysis, so we connect with them in a special way.

Do you remember one story of a patient which makes you particularly proud to be a nurse?
I do. Our dialysis center doesn't work on Sundays. The patient contacted doctors on the phone and complained of feeling suffocated, pressure in the chest and weakness in the legs. It was hyperkalemia. I came to the center together with our doctor and we did an extraordinary dialysis for the patient and saved his life. By the way, the patient had the same date of birth as me, that's how I remember him!

Is there something you wish more patients knew or would pay more attention to?
I believe that the patient's diet on dialysis is something that can be worked on permanently and inexhaustibly. The diet of our patients is very complex. Specifically, I think we need to work on permanent education of patients.

How would you describe the atmosphere with your colleagues?
We have been working as a team for a long time, sometimes it is dynamic, sometimes it is peaceful, But alway, there is trust, respect and respect between us. Like a big happy family!

How does a day in the clinic look like for you as a team?
At the morning meeting we agree on the daily division of tasks, everything is done professionally. Occasionally there is time for casual stories.
